Ribosome degradation and the degradation products in starved Escherichia coli. V. Ribonucleoprotein particles from glucose-starved cells.

The properties of the abnormal ribonucleoprotein particles produced by Escherichia coli Q-13 starved for glucose were studied. Smaller species of these partially deproteinized particles separable to six distinct sizes contained partially degraded ribonucleic acids. The mode of ribosome degradation under this condition is discussed in terms of differential appearance of these intermediate partic...

Role of ribosome degradation in the death of starved Escherichia coli cells.

In Escherichia coli cultures limited for phosphate, the number of ribosomal particles was reduced to a small percentage of its earlier peak value by the time the viable cell count began to drop; the 30S subunits decreased more than the 50S subunits. Moreover, the ribosomal activity was reduced even more: these cells no longer synthesized protein, and their extracts could not translate phage RNA...

Degradation of lindane by Escherichia coli.

Lindane was degraded by Escherichia coli isolated from rat feces. About 10% of the added lindane was metabolized by the bacterium in Trypticase soy broth containing the pesticide. A single metabolite, 2,3,4,5,6-pentachloro-1-cyclohexene, was detected and identified by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry.

Bacteriophage T4 inhibits colicin E2-induced degradation of Escherichia coli DNA. 3. Zone sedimentation analyses of the DNA degradation products.

The deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of Escherichia coli B is converted by colicin E2 to products soluble in cold trichloroacetic acid; we showed previously that this DNA degradation (hereafter termed solubilization) is subject to inhibition by infection with phage T4 and that at least two modes of inhibition can be differentiated on the basis of their sensitivity to chloramphenicol (CM). This repor...

Ribosome degradation in growing bacteria.

Ribosomes are large ribozymes that synthesize all cellular proteins. As protein synthesis is rate-limiting for bacterial growth and ribosomes can comprise a large portion of the cellular mass, elucidation of ribosomal turnover is important to the understanding of cellular physiology. Although ribosomes are widely believed to be stable in growing cells, this has never been rigorously tested, owi...
